John Owens

John began his golf career in St. Joseph, MO. It was there he won many junior titles and city championships. He also played in the Kansas City area state tournament with Jim Colbert.

His father, Everett Owens, who was the PGA golf professional at the St. Joseph Country Club, was instrumental in providing John with the expertise that he needed to teach the game of golf.

John attended the University of Houston on a golf scholarship. Because of his teaching ability he helped many of his teammates improve their game.

John has been teaching full time since 1970, where he taught in Nevada, California, Florida and Oklahoma.

John founded the Par Advantage Golf School in 1990. It was the first of its kind to be indoors and to use cameras in the state of Oklahoma.

In 2004, John semi-retired. He continues to work, however, with a few former students and young professionals that are trying to get on the PGA tour.

John has helped many professionals as well as amateurs, including Doug Tewell, whom he worked with while Doug was in high school in Stillwater.

Doug Tewell said, “John is a great teacher. I have referred many golfers to John, including my son, Jay.”

Wes Wilkerson (Professional in Oklahoma City, OK) “John has helped me with my game and taught me how to teach over the last 10 years. When the pro’s need help they call John.”

Bud Belz, President and founder of the Auto Club of America said, “John is the best teacher of the game I have ever met. I was a 31 handicap when I met John. In seven years he took me to a 3.”
